When you have decided to start living an eco-friendly lifestyle, you need to consider every aspect of your life including the types of fabrics and clothing that you use for your family. Most clothes require the use of chemicals at some point in the production process. Organic and eco-friendly clothes, however, minimize your exposure to chemicals and are better for the environment.

Bamboo

There has been some debate over whether or not fabric made from bamboo should be considered eco-friendly. Some manufacturers use some chemicals when bamboo is processed, although others have found ways to eliminate the need for most chemicals or synthetic materials. Advocates for bamboo clothing approve of using the plant because of its sustainability. Bamboo grows quickly without fertilizers or pesticides, and it is considered to be an eco-friendly alternative to silk. The drape and feel of bamboo clothing wins over many people who have worn it.

Organic Cotton

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the amount of farmland used for organic farming is growing exponentially. Organic cotton fields produce chemical-free and unbleached cotton for a variety of uses, and many of the farmers grow their crops using only rainwater or as little groundwater as possible. Organic cotton clothing is completely natural and has no added synthetic materials or chemicals.

Hemp

Hemp is being used more frequently in the fashion industry because of both its sustainability and its durability. Hemp grows easily without the need for herbicides or pesticides. It grows quickly and can reach maturity in only four months. Hemp is resistant to disease and has very strong fibers. Hemp clothing has been created for centuries, and its durability has made it very popular. In addition to being used for fabric, every part of the hemp plant can be used for items from fuel to paper.

Organic Wool

Organic wool is sheared from sheep that are raised on organic farms. The sheep must be raised on an organic diet, and no chemicals or hormones can be used on them. Chlorine-free wool is better for the environment and for your skin, and the quality is comparable to traditional wool clothing.

Recycled Materials

Clothing and accessories can be made from a variety of recycled materials. Shirts, jackets and totes are manufactured using recycled plastic bottles. Some shoes have recycled tires as soles. Polyester and rayon fabrics can be recycled to produce new clothing that looks and feels luxuriously new. Fashion designers can create jewelry, bags and other accessories with a wide variety of previously used materials.

Wearing eco-friendly clothing doesn’t mean that you have to look dowdy or strange. New technology and creative designers have given you the opportunity to make sure that every piece of clothing and accessory that you wear protects our earth.
