Some Green Tenant Guidelines

As renters, we can still act as environmentalists. Although we may not be able to make any structural changes in the house or apartment we’re renting, we can still make a difference. While we can’t begin replacing the furnace or adding insulation or improve the electrical, plumbing, and heating systems in our rented space, we can still work on finding ways to improve the environment.

There are many actionable high and low-tech strategies that can be taken. While some may need the permission of the landlord to improve interior space, other ideas don’t require consensus because they are lifestyle choices that reduce energy wastage and excessive water consumption. Implementing eco-friendly ideas can make a world of difference to greening a rented space.

Making More Eco-Friendly Choices

Here are some practical things that you can do today:

• Reduce electric light consumption by burning candles for a more mellow evening.
• Cut down on the use of heaters and air-conditioners, only applying them when necessary.
• Eliminate refrigeration and ice-box needs by buying foods that don’t require freezing.
• Recycling things that would usually end up in a landfill.

While a tenant may not be able to change the structural aspects of his or her space, lifestyle changes can have a positive environmental impact.

Green Leases

However, structural changes of a living space are possible, too, with the increasingly popular idea of “green leases.” Apart from lifestyle change and some technological adaptations, green tenants also have another option: renting homes and apartments from those who offer green leases.

This initiative is a result of the ideas of The United States Green Building Counsel that is designing ways to improve indoor air quality and build structures with renewable building materials. For instance a restriction of building materials with VOCs has led to happier tenants and longer leases. Green leases work on improving the structure of buildings rather than forcing the tenant to do all the work to help the environment.
